Tablecloth Hugo Grotius 02-2011
The market square of Delft features a remarkable statue. The statue of Hugo de Groot (Hugo Grotius). Grotius is born in Delft and his final resting place in the Nieuwe Kerk. Grotius was a famous Dutch jurist. His most famous work is On the Law of War and Peace: Three books (De jury belli ac pacis libri tres), which he wrote during his detention at Slot Loevestein. Grotius is best know because of his heroic escape from Slot Loevestein inside a chest of books. The tablecloth shows his entire escape route. The napkins feature the main characters of the story. During dinner this amazing story of one of Delft’s most famous inhabitants will revive once more.
Characters on the napkins are: Hugo de Groot, Maria van Reigersberch, Elselina van Houweningen, Prouninck van Deventer, Maurtis van Oranje and the chest of books Grotius used to escape.
Table cloth specifications: Woven damask (50% cotton, 50% linen) of 3m x 1.7m.
The tablecloth is winning entry for the Delft Tableware Design Competition 2011.
